You only have to buy a mattress a few times in your lifetime. While it might seem pretty straightforward, you may be stuck having lousy sleep for a long time if you make a mistake. There are many variables when it comes to mattresses, so you must make some choices before shopping for one.

New or Used?

Are you planning on buying a brand-new mattress or a used one? In most cases, it's best to buy one that's brand new, but you may get a great deal on a used one that's relatively new—someone might have decided to get a different mattress after just purchasing one recently. To play it safe and get a warranty and have the option to return it, you should buy a new one if you can afford it.

Size

If you already have a bed, you will need to buy a mattress that fits. If you don't have the bed yet, you can choose a size that will work best in your bedroom or, based on whether or not you will share the bed with someone else. The most common mattress sizes are twin, full, queen, and king, and there are varieties of each.

Style

Do you want a spring mattress, an air mattress, or a foam mattress? There are many styles to choose from, so you should try out a few different types and decide which one you like best. Each comes at various price points, and you can ship some in small boxes that will fit in your car.

Comfort

Comfort is the most important thing to consider when buying a mattress. You must be as comfortable as possible to get a good night's sleep. Don't just order a mattress without trying it first; lie down on each one you're considering buying, so you know it's comfortable enough for you.

Price

You probably have a budget for your new mattress, and if you go about it the right way, you should be able to find a good one in your price range. There are mattresses available for a few hundred dollars up to thousands. Stay within your budget, as you should be able to find a great one, whether your budget is big or small.

Will You Need a Boxspring?

Will you need to get a boxspring with your mattress, or will you place it on a platform bed? If you need a boxspring, you might be able to get a mattress that includes one. If you get a boxspring, choose one that matches your mattress.
